Environmental Filter
Orientation: When designing the cabin and choosing the orientation, I applied some basic principles, such as protect the eastern and southern sides to allow for the cooling breeze. These principles were also applied to the Canoe Reach Residence meaning that their orientation seems very similiar when looking at the house. Protecting from the western sun: It is common knowledge that it is best to protect a building from the afternoon sun. This is why I have postitioned the house facing to east to catch the morning sunlight for the house. In the afternoon, sun is going to west, and the sunlight is directly going to western side and back of the house. And then I designed the concrete wall to protect the house, and also I designed the shade to protect those windows which facing to the west.

Views: The Canoe Reach Residence is located nearby the Brisbane River, with great views of the river side. I wanted to incorporate this into the cabin design, and that is why I opened the east facade of the cabin as well as included a lot of windows to exploit those great views. The house is lifted up by supporting columns to give a sense of high view of east. In the cabin, we can get the nice views through the living room, dining room, and bedroom.

Opening the eastern facade: In order to exploit the common south eastern winds, I opened up the eastern facade of the cabin and including large glass doors. To be open the view, the house can catch the morning sunlight and air flow.


Space within space: I design the cabin as two parts, semi-public space and private space. The semi-public space includes living room, dining room, and kitchen. The private space is higher that the semi-public space, including bathroom, working room, and bedroom.



A Delightful Experience
Structure: The cabin is divided into two parts, and each part has its own functions. The ground floor is a semi-public space, and it includes the living room, dining room, and kitchen. The living room has three sides windows to get enough sunlight and to get nice views of the environment. The upper floor is a private space, including bathroom, working room, bedroom, and reflecting space. It is supported by steel columns to achieve a nice view from the bedroom and reflecting space.
Entrance: The long and strait entrance of Canoe Reach Residence is made by concrete and steel, which is very impressive. To imitate its idea, I designed a similar entrance for the cabin, which leads to the main entrance of the cabin.
Pavilion: The pavilion of the Canoe Reach Residence is a special living room for people to view the riverside. And the walls of pavilion are made of glasses. However, the pavilion I designed is a part of the bedroom on the upper floor. The bedroom has two parts, sleeping space and reflecting space, and they are divided by a folding door.



A Container of Human Activities

Zoning for activities: The division of zones for human activities is very clear in the cabin design. Each part is a separate zone for human activities. The ground floor is a semi-public space for living and dining. The upper floor is a private space for working, reflecting, and sleeping.

Circulation space: From the floor plan, the circulation space can be showed clearly. The corridor and stairs connect to each space.


Part B - Analysis of Archetype

Canoe Reach Residence
Designer: Brian Steendyk

He is a Brisbane architect working in lots of design disciplines including furniture, interior, urban design, and architecture. He graduated from QUT and the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago. "Steendyk was one of 10 short-listed designers in the Bombay Sapphire Design Discovery Award 2004 and a judge of the 2004 Australian Design Awards" (Powerhouse Museum, 2005).



Environmental Filter





Windows frame views: Windows of bedrooms and the steel-and-glass living pavilion frame nice views of the Brisbane River.



Site related context in regards to environment: The backyard of Canoe Reach Residence relates to the Brisbane River by a stone path. "A fifty five thousand litre underground rain water tank captures water from the roof and grounds for the garden reticulation system (World Architecture News, 2008)."
Structure is an environmental filter: From the entry court, a mounded earth embankment prepense obscures the form of the house, and the U-shaped plan surrounding the courtyard focuses attention towards the river.
Selective materials (natural): The building was built by masonry walls and timber trim.





A Delightful Experience



Structural: Canoe Reach Residence engages the landscape at the entry courtyard to visually minimise the garage and give the false appearance of a one story loggia. This sets up an unexpected arrival sequence to a central courtyard that opens up to a two story space with overhead parasol roof. The parasol courtyard roof opens on three sides to expel hot air, and ventilation slots at the back of the central courtyard ventilate the garage below. (Miranda & Sarah, 2008, p.283)



Aestihetic: The steel-and-glass living pavilion that reaches across the pool and cantilevers out to take in breathtaking views up and down the Brisbane River.



Spatial arrangement: The courtyard is the central focus of the house which embraces the notion of an outdoor and indoor area for the family to live in.

Function design: Living spaces including the kitchen, library and lounge box feed off the courtyard level, and bedrooms are organised above the living spaces of the courtyard.
Circulation space: From the floor plan, the circulation space can be showed clearly. The corridor and stairs connect to each space.
Spatial arrangement: Living spaces including the kitchen, living room and library feed off the courtyard level, as does the steel and glass living pavilion which reaches across the pool and cantilevers out to take in breathtaking views up and down the Brisbane River. Bedrooms are organised above the living spaces of the courtyard, cleverly utilizing floor levels to maintain a hierarchy of privacy from the court with views of the river from each room. "The pool area and adjoining sheltering pavilion spills out onto a sculptured grass plane that picturesquely cascades down towards the river’s edge and boat pontoon". (Miranda & Sarah, 2008, p.283)

Canoe Reach Residence

Canoe Reach Residence is sited nearby the Brisbane River. It is designed by Brian Steendyk. From the entry court, a mounded earth embankment deliberately obscures the form of the house, and give a false appearance of a one story house. This sets up an unexpected arrival sequence to a central courtyard that opens up to a two story space.

The U-shaped plan surrounding the courtyard focuses attention towards the Brisbane River and reduces the building depth for natural air-ventilation. Living spaces feed off the courtyard level, and the steel-and-glass living pavilion cantilevers out to take views up and down the Brisbane River. Bedrooms are organised above the living spaces to achieve a ladder of privacy and provide continuous views to the river. (Miranda & Sarah, 2008, p.283)

The pool area and adjoining sheltering pavilion spill out onto a sculpted grass plane that forms a picturesque cascade down towards the river’s edge and boat pontoon. The result is a residence that employs architectural detail to define spaces and engages the senses, enhancing the occupants’ joy of living. (World Architecture News, 2008)



Chicken Point Cabin


The idea for the cabin is that of a lakeside shelter in the woods—a little box with a big window that opens to the surrounding landscape. The cabin’s big window-wall (30 feet by 20 feet) opens the entire living space to the forest and lake. Materials are low maintenance—concrete block, steel, concrete floors and plywood—in keeping with the notion of a cabin, and left unfinished to naturally age and acquire a patina that fits in with the natural setting.

The designer used a large steel pipe made for the Alaskan Oil Pipeline as a fireplace and converted an old steel coil into a table base. The mechanical devices in this house that turn static architectural elements into those with dynamic movement, often with the direct participation of the users. ( Dung, 2006, p. 79)




Marika Alderton House




The Marika/Alderton house was completed in 1994, and it was designed by Murcutt. It is located at Yirkkala on Cape Arnhem, Northern Territory. The house is a gabled steel structure on a raised rectilinear platform. The planning is modernist but closely geared to the site, its views and climatic conditions. Designed for cyclones and floods, with sophisticated modulation of temperature and airflow, the house is innovative and commendable. Vogue Living describes it as "bridging the cultures" and (ironically for a "light touch") as "ground-breaking architecture". Murcutt suggests it as a prototype for prefabricated Aboriginal housing.
